Auditors met in Prague to discuss experience from audits aimed at the climate change

On October 14–17, 2013, the 11th Annual EUROSAI WGEA Meeting was organised at the headquarters of the Supreme Audit Office (SAO) in Prague, Czech Republic. A training seminar on fraud and corruption took place the day prior to the annual EUROSAI WGEA Meeting.

The EUROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (EUROSAI WGEA) was formally established in 1999 by a resolution of the 4th EUROSAI Congress held in Paris. At present, the EUROSAI WGEA has 44 members. The aim of the EUROSAI WGEA is to encourage the supreme audit institutions in Europe to initiate and implement audits within the area of climate change and sustainability and to exchange their experience.

The main topics of the seminar were: 1) fight against fraud and corruption during audits aimed at the environment; 2) sustainable land use; 3) assessing validity and reliability in quantitative and qualitative analyses. The aim of the Meeting was to share information and experience from environmental auditing of the individual supreme audit institutions, which could lead to improvements to management of the sustainable use of natural resources. During the Meeting, the attendees also compared their experience with gathering and processing the acquired data.

The working group aimed the discussion at sustainable land use and assessing validity and reliability in quantitative and qualitative analyses. Participants exchanged their experience from both the areas and tried out their knowledge while solving practical tasks at group projects.

In total, 69 representatives from 24 European supreme audit institutions, including the European Court of Auditors (ECA), the European Environment Agency (EEA), the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), and „Plan Bleu“ (a non-governmental organisation for the environment and development of the Mediterranean) took part at the meeting.
